Compression Socks vs Sleeves: The Main Difference
Compression socks cover the foot, ankle, and lower leg. Most styles extend to just below the knee, although ankle-length and thigh-high options are also available. Because they include the foot and heel, they provide continuous compression from the foot upward through the calf.
Compression sleeves fit around the ankle and calf but leave the foot and toes uncovered. They are commonly used during activity or recovery when a person wants calf support without changing how their shoe fits. Some sleeves begin just above the ankle, while others include a stirrup or a small section that sits under the foot.
That difference in coverage matters. If swelling collects in the foot or around the ankle, a sleeve may not provide enough support on its own. In some cases, pressure from a sleeve can contribute to fluid gathering below its lower edge. A sleeve can be useful when the issue is limited to the calf, such as a feeling of muscle fatigue after activity. The sleeve should lie flat against the skin without rolling, bunching, or creating a narrow band at the top or bottom.
Sleeves are less suitable when the foot, ankle, or toes are swollen. Choose sleeves when you want calf-focused support during activity and have no foot or ankle swelling that requires coverage.
